reconciliation farming land acknowledgement kemptville

The land on which we farm has been home to so many peoples.  This land is the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People. The Algonquin peoples have lived on this land since time immemorial.  We are so grateful to have the opportunity to be present in this territory.

“We are not the first to tend to this land and we will be far from the last.”

This is the traditional territory of many peoples including the Wendake-Nionwentsïo (Huron-Wendat), Omàmìwininìwag (Algonquin), Anishinabewaki and Haudenosaunee Peoples.

Land acknowledgement reminds readers that most of us are new to this land. The history of this land and the peoples who inhabited it prior to formation of the country we now know must be shared and acknowledged. This acknowledgement is meant to provide space for reflection and motivation for change in the process of reconciliation.

For Indigenous people honouring and acknowledging the Aboriginal homelands on which they gather is a practice that is centuries old.  Please accompany Vintage Soil Farm in the widespread progression of this practice.  A land acknowledgement may feel like a small step, but it is a small step in the right direction as we all work towards building a more positive future.
